If we had to make a list of recommended places for rural tourism in Spain, without a doubt Taramundi would be there. In fact, this Asturian town was the pioneer of this type of tourism in our country, back in 1984.
It is located in the westernmost area of the Principality, already bordering the province of Lugo. It is so close to Galicia that Eonaviego, a variant of Galician, is spoken in Taramundi.
It appears between mountains, valleys and almost magical forests. This is one of the places that exemplifies the tourist motto of Asturias for decades: “Natural paradise”. These are seven things (at least) to see in Taramundi.
House Museum of Traditional Cutlery
Cutlery is one of the Taramundi brands in the world. The universe of this traditional trade can be observed in the House Museum of Traditional Cutlery, where one of the largest knives in the world welcomes us, or seen live in a workshop.
O Mazonovo Mills Museum
It is one of the largest water mill museums in Spain. The one in Mazonovo has 19 and a curious and rudimentary hydraulic power station. It is located in a place of singular beauty, on the banks of the Cabreira and Turía rivers.
Ethnographic complex of Teixóis
This hamlet is located 4 kilometers from Taramundi. In this enclave there is an important set of hydraulic devices in a very good state of conservation and operation. We can see all these machines in operation, at the same time that they give us the pertinent technical and historical explanations. The set of devices is made up of: mallet, mill, whetstone and fulling mill.
Ethnographic Museum of Os Esquíos
We find it 2.5 kilometers from Taramundi, inside a house inhabited for centuries by families of ferreiros. A collection of great cultural interest of utensils and tools from a village in the region is shown. It is very interesting for its collections of ancient objects in danger of extinction and for its great diversity of pieces (more than a thousand).
Eo, Oscos and Terras de Burón River Reserve
This natural space includes 14 municipalities in Galicia and Asturias. In the Asturian part are the towns of Castropol, Vegadeo, San Tirso de Abres, Villanueva de Oscos, Santa Eulalia de Oscos and San Martín de Oscos and the one that concerns us, Taramundi.
Loom Museum
Located in the center of Taramundi, it shows the transformation of the raw materials used, from their collection to the elaboration of the garment (collection, spinning, dyeing and weaving). It is possible to contemplate the loom in operation.
The old parsonage
We already say that Taramundi was one of the pioneering centers of rural tourism in Spain. The town and its former parsonage rose to media notoriety in the 80s of the 20th century for being a pioneering experiment and pilot of rural tourism in a then depressed area. It went right. Today the municipality is an emblem of this type of tourism and a model of sustainable development to follow, in which tourists enjoy routes on foot, by bike, etc.
